Board Responsibilities
Executive Members
President
- Responsible for governing CUP and representing CUP to other organizations and the community at large
- Responsible for enacting the mandate of plenary and chairing the Board of Directors between national plenaries
- Set organizational goals and direction
- Act as a public advocate for the student press
Term: The President’s term begins May 1 and concludes April 30 the following year.
Vice-President
- If the President is absent or is unable to act, preside at all meetings of the Board of Directors. (See above)
- Provide support to the President as needed and have such powers and duties as the board may specify
Term: The Vice-President’s term begins May 1 and concludes April 30 the following year.
Human Resources Officer
- Partake in the hiring of any employee or board member
- Ensure that all hiring policies are in accordance with the law
- Act as a mediator in the event of disputes between or regarding directors of the corporation
Term: The Human Resource Officer’s term begins May 1 and concludes April 30 the following year.
Treasurer
- Supervise the financial affairs of the corporation
- Ensure that accurate financial records are kept and that proper care is taken regarding financial information
- Make recommendations to the board and membership in matters regarding the financial position of the corporation

Communications Officer
- Responsible for tasks like writing press releases and responding to media inquiries about the company
- Maintaining contacts within the media
- May also be responsible for writing marketing materials or coordinating promotional events

Secretary
- Attend all meetings and record all meeting minutes
- Act as the keeper of all books, papers, records, documents, and other instruments belonging to the corporation
- Supply meeting minutes and according documents to the Board of Directors for meetings

Representative Members
Continuity Representative
- Have been an officer of the corporation in the previous year
- May be present at board meetings to provide suggestions based on previous experience

Western Region Representative
- Represent member papers of their region at the CUP board level and act as a liaison between member papers
- Encourage members to fulfil their responsibilities to CUP
- Required to attend all CUP board meetings
- Conduct regional workshops and/or conferences to improve skills
- Contact member papers for CUP-related discussion
Term: The CUP Board Regional Representative’s term begins May 1 and concludes April 30 the following year.
Prairies North Representative
- Represent member papers of their region at the CUP board level and act as a liaison between member papers
- Encourage members to fulfil their responsibilities to CUP
- Required to attend all CUP board meetings
- Conduct regional workshops and/or conferences to improve skills

Ontario Representative
- Represent member papers of their region at the CUP board level and act as a liaison between member papers

Quebec Representative

Non-Board Positions
John H. McDonald Awards (JHM) Coordinator(s):
- Keep the Board of Directors informed on the status of the JHM Awards
- Fundraise prizes for each category for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes
- Fundraise additional amounts as required for the funding of the JHM gala
- Work to organize, arrange and supervise all aspects of the awards
- Promote the Johnnies to all members of student press
- Update award category descriptions as necessary
Term: The JHM Awards Coordinator’s term begins May 1 and concludes April 30 the following year.
National Conference Coordinators:
- Keep the Board of Directors informed on the National Conference
- Solicit funding, services, and sponsorship for the National Conference
- Prepare and administrate the National Conference budget in consultation with the Board of Directors
- Work to organize, arrange and supervise all aspects of the National Conference
- Work in conjunction with the host paper to ensure that assistance and resources are provided for National Conference staff
- Arrange keynote speakers who are locally available and coordinate selection of keynote speakers from other parts of the country
Term: The National Conference Coordinators’ term begins May 1 and concludes February 30 the following year.
